Signs that your toilet requires replacement

There comes a time when a toilet requires replacement – particularly if it’s been heavily used over its lifetime. If you recognise any of the following signs, it could be time to consider a toilet replacement.

Ongoing repairs

If your toilet is constantly breaking down or having problems, then it’s probably time to update. Although many parts in a modern toilet cistern can be repaired or replaced, there comes a time when it’s more cost-effective and practical to replace the toilet entirely.

High water bills

If your water bills are high for no obvious reason, the problem could lie with your toilet. A toilet that’s old or not working properly will generally use more water. Newer toilets are more water-efficient than their predecessors, which typically don’t have water-saving features, such as dual-flush buttons.

Common toilet faults that lead to higher water bills include:-

  • Faulty inlet valves.
  • Worn out washers on the outlet valve – resulting in water dripping constantly into the bowl (sometimes the water is hard to spot unless you position some toilet paper towards the top of the bowl).
  • Leaking or deteriorated “easy hookers” (also known as flexi hoses) – these usually require replacement after their warranty expires (typically after 5 years).
  • Faulty / leaking mini cisterns or shut off valves.

Wobbly toilet

A toilet that remains wobbly after the floor screws have been tightened could be leaking at the base. Many wobbly toilets can be fixed by replacing the wax ring and support timber that is water damaged; however, a toilet replacement is often the better option.

Unsightly appearance

If you’re renovating your bathroom, or dissatisfied with your toilet’s appearance, a toilet replacement is almost inevitable. Over time, many toilets accumulate unsightly stains at the bottom of the bowl (usually caused by mineral build-up) – not to mention get scratched.
