Important Note:
The information on this page is “general in nature” and subject to change by the relevant government agencies without notice. Customers should always conduct their due diligence when considering STCs and ESCs. Far South Plumbing relies solely on the expertise of Greenbank Environmental (GB Environmental Trading Pty Ltd) to determine STC and ESC eligibility, as well as calculate certificate and trade values.
What is a small-scale technology certificate (STC)?
A small-scale technology certificate (STC) is a tradable certificate that incentivises householders and small businesses to purchase an “eligible small-scale renewable energy system.” STCs are issued by the Clean Energy Regulator (Australian Government) under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). New solar water heaters and air source heat pumps qualify as “eligible” systems under the SRES.
The benefit of STCs is that they can be traded for cash – offsetting the cost of a new solar water heater or air source heat pump. Many system owners assign their STC/s to a registered environmental trader to receive an immediate financial benefit. Several factors, including geographical location and system output, determine the number of STCs issued on a new system.*
Further information on the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) can be found here.
* A single STC represents 1 megawatt hour (MWh) of generated or displaced renewable electricity.
What is an energy savings certificate (ESC)?
An energy savings certificate (ESC) is a tradable certificate that incentivises NSW residents and small businesses to undertake an ”eligible energy savings activity in NSW.” ESCs are administered and regulated by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS). An “eligible” activity under the ESS includes the installation of a new solar water heater, air source heat pump, or compliant furnace (in a business setting).
ESCs (pronounced “eskies”) have a cash value and can be traded through an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) – offsetting the cost of a new solar water heater, air source heat pump, or compliant furnace (in a business setting). As an Accredited Certificate Provider, Greenbank Environmental (Accreditation ID: GHGR02366A) is authorised to calculate the value of ESCs and facilitate their trade.* Far South Plumbing serves as a representative of Greenbank Environmental.
Further information on the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) can be found here.
* A single ESC represents 1 megawatt hour (MWh) of energy.
